Vintage Emerson 8 Desk Fan #19644, An Amazing, Early Century, Restored Antique
Vintage Emerson 8 Desk Fan #19644, An Amazing, Early Century, Restored Antique. The Emerson Electric Mfg Co. Louis circa 1916 Model #19644, 8 Desk Fan Brass Blades & Brass Cage. Emerson manufactured some of the earliest Electric fans. From the early 1900’s, Emerson fans set a standard for design, style and manufacturing. Emerson’s big advantage was the oil bath lubrication design. Whenever the blades turn, the main bearing gets bathed in oil. A far superior design over other motors. And was patent protected for many years. Of the heavy, cast iron “stepped base” and the patented 1. Both features unique to Emerson. Late in 1916, model “19644” was the last fan of its generation to come off the production line. For 1917, Emerson updated its Fan division, Retooled its production line. And this generation fan would never be made again. Fortunately some will get restored and survive for future generations. As a member of the “Antique Fan Collectors Association” Naturally I’m interested in Authenticity, as Preservation is the main goal. And that is the most important part of this process, finding a worthy forever home. For the restoration, new base rubber footing, new period correct cloth braided head wire and power cord, along with original Emerson wire hole grommets. The ceramic 3 speed selector switch is securely mounted in the base, slide handle shows in the off position. The speed switch and the motor’s stator have been carefully cleaned and completely tested. A heavy electrical sealer/varnish is baked onto the components coils. This seals out air and moisture, while providing a strong bonding coat. New fiber washer are used to adjust motor alignment and lash. A new leather oil bath seal was also installed, no leaks. I will supply maintenance recommendations along with a 10 year supply of preferred oil. Bead blasting completely removes the old finish. A gun applied automotive paint system uses multiple coats of primer, color and clear. Then baked on to produce a cured hardened finish, that’s ready for polishing. The brass blade and cage were striped of old clear. Then highly polished to a reflective shine. Then multiple coats of clear are baked on. All the pieces are polished through 7000 grit paper. Then machined polished for deep shine that is both stunning and durable. In past auctions, I’ve committed a majority of the description, to detailing the restoration process. While these details are important, that really isn’t what this fan is. This fan is, over 100 years old and still operating at peak levels, a fantastic example of Form and Function. This fan is, an elegant sculpture of engineering, style and time. And as art, it pulls you to it. What this fan is, Is a Time Machine that captures ones imagination, if even for just a glimpse, is interesting. All of the many processes that a restoration requires, all the adjustments are too numerous to cover here. If you have any questions, ask them. An heirloom you will be proud to display and use for generations yet to come. Auctiva offers Free Image Hosting and Editing. Auctiva gets you noticed! Track Page Views With. Auctiva’s FREE Counter.
