I don’t think you’ll find a better, broader or more balanced assortment of technical antiques anywhere — hundreds of listings each year, almost all of them featuring eye-popping “gee whiz” gadgetry in exceptional original condition. Here’s a beautiful, working, and very uncommon General Electric 5-speed swivel mount “pancake” fan that dates to the turn of the last century. As you can see in the pictures and the video, the fan runs smoothly and quietly, and its cosmetic condition is excellent. The patina on the brass in particular is extraordinary. The speed switch is original, and the fan works on all 5 speeds. Glossy original black enamel, with scattered minor marks in the surface consistent with age and authenticity. Brass fittings are correct and original. No damage to the cage, no damage to the center-mounted GE emblem. The line cord is an electrically safe replacement, but the fan otherwise appears to be original throughout. Please note that caution needs to be exercised when using or displaying an early pancake fan, particularly if there are young children in your household. As you can see in the photographs, the fan’s. AC line cord runs directly to the bindings posts on the back of the motor housing, and if you (or your child) accidently touch these binding posts (even when the fan has not been turned on), you’ll receive a significant shock. While it might not be enough to kill you, it may be sufficient to jolt your hand through the cage, causing significant damage to your fingers if the fan is in operation. Just a warning, folks. The fan will be partially disassembled for safe travel. Re-assembly should take only a few minutes. The takeaway: it is unusual, to say the least, to find a working AC fan from the first few years of the century, but even more unusual is finding one in such remarkable condition. The fan is approximately 15″ high with a 12″ blade span. Barn-Find, but when your “bargain” arrives broken, and without any hint of how you might be able to put it back together, you’ll realize that you really do get exactly what you pay for.
