Restored Emerson B Junior. 8 Inch Oscillating Fan. A restored antique or vintage electric fan can help set the theme or mood of a room like few other single objects can. Many times the restoration of a home will include period furniture, lighting, wall decor, plumbing fixtures, etc. But electric fans, one of the mainstays of comfort before air conditioning, are so often absent. Antique and vintage electric fans have covered the design spectrum through the decades. From Art Nouveau, Art Deco and Art Moderne to Jet-Age styling, fan models exemplifying each period can be found. This allows them to add to the design element of a room, rather than simply serve a utilitarian purpose. This Emerson B Junior 8 inch oscillating fan was manufactured around 1931 and has a cast iron motor housing, gear housing and base. The base contains a two position (off/on) sliding switch. The fan is approximately 11.5 inches tall, 8.5 inches wide and 7 inches front to rear. It weighs about 9 pounds. The motor housing, base, blade hub, cage, etc. Were bead blasted down to bare metal and painted with black PPG automotive single stage urethane. All polished brass parts were sprayed with Nikolas lacquer. The original steel blades were replaced with solid brass blades fabricated and riveted onto the steel hub by yours truly. Both the head wire and power cord were replaced with new old style (NOS) cloth covered wire. The new brown power plug has an art deco look to it. Both the wicking felt in the front and rear oilers as well as the green protective felt on the base were replaced. All fiber washers and rubber grommets were replaced. The sliding (on/off) switch was restored and the stator windings were inspected, tested and then sealed with electric motor insulating varnish. The gears in the gear housing were lubricated with an appropriate wheel bearing grease. The new wicking felts in the top front and rear oil holes were saturated with a non-detergent motor oil. The oscillating arc movement is controlled by placing the steel shoulder screw in one of three positions located on the bottom of the round brass crank below the gear housing. Many fans came out of the factory with various cosmetic blemishes and/or other imperfections.
