ANTIQUE SIGNAL ELECTRIC MODEL 550A – TWO SPEED 10 OSCILLATING DESK FAN ARRX. Signal electric began in menominee, mi in 1892 producing telegraph & telephone equipment such as hand crank telephone generators & switchboards. The first residential electric fan they produced was in 1926 and they continued with electric fans until the plant closed in 1964. This model was introduced in the early 30’s as their “flagship model” oscillator boasting “an ironclad factory guarantee of satisfaction”, the “A” indicating it was equipped with large overlapping “quiet” blades to move a greater volume of air more quietly than the previous narrow blades. In an era before air conditioning existed & in the depression, electric fans were of great importance & an expensive luxury. This fan is of the highest quality & would have been the newest technology at the time of production. I have restored MANY fans (including about 12 of this model) & without a doubt, if i could only own one fan, it would be a signal 550A (the 450 models have carbon brushes). This fan has been completely disassembled. The blade guard, gear box, stand, motor covers, & bottom cover plate have been blasted & POWDER COATED, not painted (a process baked on at 500 degrees that is 10 times harder & more durable than paint) in gloss black (the blade guard in mirror silver). The motor was removed, disassembled, thoroughly cleaned, & polished. For safest everyday use, the original cord was replaced with a new thermo insulated heavy UL listed cord fitted with a new “retro” style UL listed plug, the original cloth wrapped head wires were replaced with new duplicate cloth wrapped head wires with thermo insulation UNDER the cloth & new thermo insulated lead wires were soldered to the switch. All electrical components were tested with an ohms meter & inspected to assure safety & proper operation. The oscillating gear box was removed, opened, thoroughly cleaned of old grease & gunk, then the gears were inspected for any sign of wear & packed in new, fresh, high performance grease for another 80 plus years of use. All rubber grommets were replaced with new ones & the bottom was fitted with new rubber pads (feet) to keep it firmly in place on smooth surfaces. All remaining components were thoroughly cleaned, polished, & clear coated as necessary including hand compounding the blades to their original luster (each screw gets the head polished & threads cleaned). The fan was then reassembled, properly lubricated & test run on different speeds & oscillated for a minimum of two hours to check for perfect operation. This fan is a preserved piece of machine age american history that will most likely outlive the user. PRICES GO UP APRIL 1ST FOR FAN SEASON. Because i just don’t understand the point.
