ANTIQUE UNITED ELECTRIC MFG. 10 OSCILLATING DESK FAN. United electric manufacturing co. Was incorperated in chicago, il in 1916 & began producing electric parts & accessories for cars during the rise of the automobile (horns, generators, etc). In the spring of 1925 they introduced their first residential electric fan, an 8″ model called the “eskimo. Bersted was already producing a line of inexpensive electric appliances & eventually was absorbed by mcgraw electric, makers of the famous “toastmaster” brand of electric appliances. In an era before air conditioning existed & in the depression, electric fans were of great importance & an expensive luxury. This is a perfect example & with it’s 10 size, it’s big enough to do the job yet, not obtrusively large. I have restored MANY fans & any united electric fan is extremely hard to find. This fan has been completely disassembled. The blade guard, gear box, stand, front & rear motor covers, & bottom cover plate & attached wall hanging bracket have been blasted & POWDER COATED, not painted (a process baked on at 500 degrees that is 10 times harder & more durable than paint) in gloss black (the blade guard in mirror silver). The motor was completely disassembled, cleaned, & polished. For safest everyday use, the original cord was replaced with a new thermo insulated one gauge heavier round UL listed cord fitted with a new “retro” style UL listed plug, the original cloth wrapped head wires were replaced with new duplicate cloth wrapped head wires with thermo insulation UNDER the cloth, & new thermo insulated lead wires were soldered to the switch. All electrical components were tested with an ohms meter & inspected to assure safety & proper operation. The oscillating gear box was removed, opened, thoroughly cleaned of old grease & gunk, then the gears were inspected for any sign of wear & packed in new, fresh, high performance grease for another 80 plus years of use. The front & rear bearing oil cups were removed, cleaned out, & polished & the wool oil wicks inside were replaced with new ones. All rubber grommets & the rubber feet were replaced with new ones. All remaining components were thoroughly cleaned, polished, & clear coated as necessary (each screw gets the head polished & threads cleaned), including hand compounding the blades to their original luster. The fan was then reassembled, properly lubricated & test run & oscillated for a minimum of two hours to check for perfect operation. This fan is a preserved piece of machine age american history that will most likely outlive the user. Because i just don’t understand the point. IF YOU FEEL COMPELLED TO LOOK AT IT PLEASE, PRINT OUT A COPY OF THE PICTURE, HANG IT ON YOUR WALL, & THEN MOVE ON BECAUSE THIS PRICE IS A BARGAIN FOR A PROFESSIONALLY RESTORED ANTIQUE FAN & THE POST OFFICE WON’T HAVE A RATE DECREASE UNTIL AT LEAST JANUARY 2018.
