ANTIQUE WESTINGHOUSE 10 OSCILLATING 3 SPEED DESK FAN. Westinghouse was THE true innovator in the electric fan business. They were the first company to put tesla’s ac motor in an electric fan, first to put any type of guard over the BACK of the fan blades as well as the front, first in stamped steel parts instead of castings, the list goes on & on. They also have one of the best reputations of any antique fan made as far as being trouble free fans that “run forever”. So why with all this good don’t you see many restored westinghouse antique fans? The answer is simple. They are more difficult to restore than a lot of other brands & most of them were not very pretty when they were new with everything on the fan being painted flat black from the factory. This particular fan, a 1932 10 desk/table model is a terrific fan. It is equipped with a 3 speed lever type switch and it runs & oscillates on three distinctive speeds smoother & more quiet than any fan i have restored of the same vintage. This fan has been completely disassembled. The blade guard, gearbox cover, stand, & bottom cover plate have been blasted & powder coated, not painted (a process baked on at 500 degrees that is 10 times harder & more durable than paint) in gloss black. The motor was cleaned & all electric components were tested with an ohms meter & inspected to assure safety & proper operation. The original round cord was replaced with a new thermo insulated round cord & a new”retro” style plug was installed. The oscillating gear box was opened, thoroughly cleaned of old grease & gunk, then the gears were removed & inspected for any sign of wear & packed in new, fresh, high performance grease for another 85 plus years of use. Rubber grommets were replaced with new ones. All remaining components were thoroughly cleaned, polished, & clear coated as necessary (each individual screw gets the head polished & threads cleaned). Rubber feet were installed to keep the fan in place when operating on smooth surfaces & absorb any vibration. The fan was then reassembled, properly lubricated & test run & oscillated on different speeds for a minimum of two hours to check for perfect operation. This fan is a preserved piece of machine age american history that will most likely outlive the user. Own a piece of george westinghouse’s innovations.
