Offered here is an original, unrestored 1920s Galvin 10 Cast Iron oscillating desk fan with solid brass blades. This fan comes from an old collection of unrestored fans and retains it’s original black japan finish in remarkably good condition. The fan has three speeds and runs very well on each of those speeds with good speed separation. After a 20 minute test run the motor was still cool to the touch. There is one problem with the oscillating mechanism where it will not stay oscillating for more than several minutes but it does oscillate nicely when it’s working. I was not able to figure out how to engage or disengage the fan from oscillating other than fiddling around with the knob on top of the gearbox. I cleaned the gearbox and installed new grease hoping to find the problem and the gears all look unworn and in great condition. The Galvin Electric Mfg. Was a smaller St. Louis manufacture making very good quality fans and other electrical goods in the 1920s. This 10″ model is probably their top of the line model in this size and is built much better than most 10″ fans. The motor and base are made of cast iron, the blade of solid brass, and the cage of welded steel with a brass, etched badge. There are no pot metal parts in this fan. The brass base data tag reads: Type UFO-10, Series No. 52 Galvin Electric Mfg. Volts 110, Current AC-DC. The brushes and commutator are all in good condition showing little wear and have all been cleaned. Even the various screw heads on the fan are clean and not with messed up screw slots so the fan has either not needed to be worked on much or work was done by someone who cared. The head wire from base to motor is original and has a small frayed area near the middle visible in the photos. This is a smaller fan than the usual high quality 12″ and 16″ fans but is built with the same high quality. This is a great fan for those who want an unrestored fan that has not been messed up. The fan will be very well packed in a sturdy apple box in a way that totally immobilizes the fan against movement that could result in damage.
