FABULOUS 5¢ GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. I have had a couple of these coin operated electric fans over the years. Never restored to this quality. A wonderful restored example of the General Electric early 20th century coin-operated fan, usually found in upscale hotels of the time. 5¢ operation would give you one hour’s usage of the fan, with the most interesting feature being the ability to shut the fan off before the hour was up and retain the remainder for later use. The fan is fully restored in beautiful gray paint, with replaced coin door. A great and fully operational example with keys. Approximate dimensions: 13″ x 9″ x 18 – 1/2. A word about condition. I love great design and this St. Louis built Emerson model 5460 12 Silver Swan fan. From the mid 1930’s delivers in every way. No other vintage fan comes close to this Art Deco beauty. This three speed fan works marvelously, packing a tremendous air flow throughout its oscillating swing. The polished aluminum finish on the fan hub, four blades, and back cover is excellent. The original four position switch with the original knob is in place and works as expected with proper progression from Off to low (I), then to medium (II), and then to high (III). The fan quickly comes up to speed on each setting with no noise, just the sound of the air blowing past. The extent of the oscillating swing is adjustable or can be halted completely with the knob at the back of the fan. There are a few minor issues. The back aluminum cover has a shallow dent. The front Silver Swan label has significant wear. The paper label over the motor is missing. The power cord is modern. The front grill cover has a few minor dents and one of the four mounting clamps is missing. The felt bottom cover has some wear along with three extra holes where screws attached the fan to a wood base. And lastly, the fan could use some additional cleaning. That’s not much for this iconic and highly collectible fan. This fan often appears in exhibitions of outstanding industrial design, including one not long ago at the St. I uploaded a short video of the fan running to YouTube. These gorgeous fans in this condition come along all too rarely. Don’t let this one slip away.. This Silver Swan fan measures about 16″ H x 14″ W x 8 D and weighs about 32 lbs.
