ANTIQUE GILBERT 1930’s ELECTRIC 9 OSCILLATING DESK FAN. Few people even realize that a. Gilbert electric, famed makers of “american flyer” toy trains & “the erector set” also produced electric fans. I have professionally restored MANY electric fans & this particular model of fan ranks in the top three antique fans i have ever restored for being unique. It is hard to find an antique oscillating fan less than 10 & if you do, you can’t normally turn the oscillating mechanism off. Usually smaller oscillators have an enclosed mechanism & automatically oscillate when they are turned on, this fan has a regular oscillating mechanism like most fans from that era, that can be turned on or off by tightening or loosening the knob on top of the gearbox. Gilbert is also the ONLY fan i have ever seen that has a knob that operates the head tilt. Instead of loosening a trundle screw or wing nut to tilt the fan head front or back, you turn a knob on the back of the fan & a worm gear under the pivot adjusts the tilt, that gets an A+ for american engineering. This is a very cool fan & with it’s size, it is perfect for an end or accent table or desk where you need a strong air mover but space may be somewhat limited. With it’s unique features & size, i would call it the bantam. Roadster of electric fans (if you know cars). This fan has been disassembled. The stand, blade guard, bottom cover plate, and motor housings have been blasted & powder coated, not painted (a process baked on at 500 degrees that is 10 times harder & more durable than paint) in gloss black. The motor was cleaned & all electrical components were tested with an ohms meter & inspected to assure safety & proper operation. For safe, everyday use the original cloth wrapped cord was replaced with a thermo-insulated cord & a new “retro” style plug was installed & new head wires with thermo-insulation under the cloth were soldered in. The oscillating gear box was opened, thoroughly cleaned of old grease & gunk, then the gears were cleaned & inspected for any sign of wear & packed in new, fresh, high performance grease for another 90 plus years of regular use. All seven rubber grommets were replaced with new ones. All remaining components were thoroughly cleaned, painted, polished, & clear coated as necessary (including hand compounding the chrome plated steel blades). The fan was then reassembled, properly lubricated & test run & oscillated for a minimum of two hours to check for perfect operation. This fan is a preserved piece of machine age american history that will most likely outlive the user. Gilbert, famed makers of “american flyer” toy trains & “the erector set” also produced electric fans, in fact, their main business was fractional horsepower electric motors. They produced electric fans under the names gilbert, icy, busy b, trailblazer, dexter, perfex, arctic, polar cub, & kesso to name most, with production starting before 1915. From the 30’s through the 50’s they were the largest employer in new haven, conneticut producing fans under the polar cub name until going out of business in 1967 (6 years after the death of founder, alfred carlton gilbert – a yale educated dentist). In an era before air conditioning existed & in the depression, electric fans were of great importance & an expensive luxury. I have restored MANY fans & here is a great little fan that will really move some air with a nice slow, wide oscillating sweep. These 8 oscillators are getting harder & harder to find. This fan has been completely disassembled. The blade guard, stand, motor housings & blades have been blasted & POWDER COATED, not painted (a process baked on at 500 degrees that is 10 times harder & more durable than paint) in gloss black the blades. The motor was disassembled & thoroughly cleaned. For safest everyday use, the original two strand lamp style cord was replaced with a new thermo insulated UL listed cord fitted with a new “retro” style UL listed plug, the original cloth wrapped head wires were replaced with new duplicate cloth wrapped head wires with thermo insulation UNDER the cloth, & the switch is new. All electrical components were tested with an ohms meter & inspected to assure safety & proper operation. All rubber grommets were replaced with new ones. All remaining components were thoroughly cleaned, polished, & clear coated as necessary (each original screw, nut, & washer gets polished & threads cleaned). This model was made for 3 seasons & is now becoming impossible to find. I have restored MANY fans & my experience with pre-war gilbert fans has proven to me that they are as “die hard” as any fan made during that era. Whoever gets this fan can count on it outlasting them with a few drops of oil now & then. This fan has been completely disassembled. The base stand, motor housings, blade guard, & blades have all been blasted & POWDER COATED, not painted (a process baked on at 500 degrees that is harder & 10 times more durable than paint) in gloss black (the blades in mirror silver). The motor was disassembled & thoroughly cleaned. ANTIQUE MADE-RITE 10 OSCILLATING DESK FAN – (CIRCA 1932 to 1934). Not much information can be found about weinig / made-rite company, although it is known that they started in 1919 & were headquartered in sandusky, ohio. A couple newspaper articles in the star-journal newspaper in december of 1934 state that they had outgrown their facility and were leaving sandusky & moving to a larger plant in another area of ohio, with the intention of going from about 160 employees to about 250 employees. Patents can be found throughout the early 30’s for various electric appliances including a waffle iron & an electric toaster. You can tell this one was made by made-rite before the 1935 aquisition because of the exposed oscillating mechanism on the back of the motor. Any oscillators made under dominion had an enclosed mechanism inside a cone mounted on the back of the motor housing. I have restored MANY fans & this model is getting particularly hard to find. It took me 2 years to find this model since the last one like this i restored. These fans are the most art deco style fans i have seen. So art deco in fact, that you could call them the walter p. Chrysler building of fans. This fan has been completely disassembled. The stand, motor housings, bottom cover plate, pivot neck, & blade guard have all been blasted & POWDER COATED, not painted (a process baked on at 500 degrees that is harder & 10 times more durable than paint) in gloss black (the blade guard in mirror silver as original). The motor was disassembled & thoroughly cleaned. For safest everyday use, the original cloth wrapped cord was replaced with a new UL listed cloth wrapped cord with thermo insulation under the cloth & fitted with a new “retro” style UL listed plug, the original cloth wrapped head wires were replaced with new duplicate cloth wrapped head wires with thermo insulation UNDER the cloth, & the switch was replaced with a new UL approved switch with thermo insulated lead wires. All electrical components were tested with an ohms meter & inspected to assure safety & proper operation. They manufactured a full line of electric household appliances which even included sun lamps, a donut maker, soldering irons, heating pads, & of course, electric fans. This model was introduced shortly after occupying the made-rite facilities & is essentially a made-rite fan with a shield shaped blade guard & a dominion emblem. In an era before air conditioning existed electric fans were of great importance & an expensive luxury costing easily as much as a window air conditioner would today. I have restored MANY fans & this is a “holy grail” of antique fan collectors & impossible to find. They were only made for about 2 seasons & are extremely difficult to find because the few that were produced get snapped up by collectors right away. If you want an electric fan that nobody else has, this is definitely it. This fan has been completely disassembled. The blade guard, motor housings, stand, & bottom cover plate have all been blasted & POWDER COATED, not painted (a process baked on at 500 degrees that is harder & 10 times more durable than paint) in gloss black (the blade guard in metallic silver). The motor was disassembled, cleaned, & polished. For safest everyday use, the original two strand heavy gauge rubber coated cord was duplicated with a new one (VERY hard to find RUBBER covered heavy parallel cord) fitted with a new “retro” style UL listed plug. The emblem was hand cleaned & double clear coated to protect the original graphics. The rubber grommets were replaced with new ones. The blades were hand compounded to their original mirror luster & all remaining components were thoroughly cleaned, polished, & clear coated as necessary (every single original screw & nut was polished & the threads cleaned). The fan was then reassembled, properly lubricated & test run & oscillated for a minimum of two hours to check for perfect operation. GILBERT 10 OSCILLATING DESK FAN – (CIRCA 1932 to 1934). Few people even realize that a. Gilbert, famed makers of “american flyer” toy trains & “the erector set” also produced electric fans, in fact, their main business was fractional horsepower electric motors. They produced electric fans under the names gilbert, icy, busy b, trailblazer, dexter, perfex, arctic, polar cub, & kesso to name a few, with production starting before 1915. From the 30’s through the 50’s they were the largest employer in new haven, conneticut producing fans under the polar cub name until going out of business in 1967 (6 years after the death of founder, alfred carlton gilbert – a yale educated dentist). In an era before air conditioning existed & during the depression, electric fans were of great importance & a very expensive luxury. This 10 oscillator was made from the 1932 through 1934 seasons. I have restored MANY fans & this model is one of my favorites. Talk about american engineering, this fan has a knob to turn that tilts the fan head front or back by worm gear! This fan has been completely disassembled. The blade guard, stand, motor housings, bottom cover plate, & blades have all been blasted & POWDER COATED, not painted (a process baked on at 500 degrees that is harder & 10 times more durable than paint) in gloss black (the blades in metallic silver). The motor was disassembled & thoroughly cleaned. For safest everyday use, the original two strand lamp style cord was replaced with a new thermo insulated one gauge heavier round UL listed cord fitted with a new “retro” style UL listed plug, the original cloth wrapped head wires were replaced with new duplicate cloth wrapped head wires with thermo insulation UNDER the cloth, & new thermo insulated lead wires were soldered to the lever switch after it was thoroughly cleaned and the contacts polished. All electrical components were tested with an ohms meter & inspected to assure safety & proper operation. ANTIQUE DOMINION ELECTRIC MFG. 10 OSCILLATING SHIELD GUARD. They manufactured a full line of electric household appliances which even included sun lamps, a donut maker, soldering irons, heating pads, & of course, electric fans. The closing of the plant occured in the mid 60’s when plastic was introduced into mass production of appliances, the competition got stiff, & many american appliance companies closed down. This model was introduced shortly after occupying the made-rite facilities & is essentially a made-rite fan with a shield shaped blade guard & a dominion emblem. In an era before air conditioning existed electric fans were of great importance & an expensive luxury costing easily as much as a window air conditioner would today. I have restored MANY fans & this is a “holy grail” of antique fan collectors & impossible to find. They were only made for about 2 seasons & are extremely difficult to find because the few that were produced get snapped up by collectors right away. If you want an electric fan that nobody else has, this is definitely it. This fan has been completely disassembled. The blade guard, motor housings, stand, & bottom cover plate have all been blasted & POWDER COATED, not painted (a process baked on at 500 degrees that is harder & 10 times more durable than paint) in gloss black (the blade guard in metallic silver). The motor was disassembled, cleaned, & polished. ANTIQUE GENERAL ELECTRIC 1930 – 3 SPEED 12 OSCILLATING DESK FAN – TYPE. AK-1 – (MANUFACTURED FOR THE’30-’31 SEASON ONLY). As we know, general electric’s first electric fan was thomas edisons first direct current electric fan. So, the 30’s & 40’s were the “golden age” of ge fans & the pinnacle of thousands of hours of electric fan research & development. They took everything that they had learned since the late 1800’s & perfected the heaviest & longest lasting fans they ever built but, it didn’t last long. In the 50’s ge became the first major company to introduce plastic into electric fan production & we all know the rest of that story. This was the “cadillac fleetwood” of fans & was among the most expensive, quality built fans of the time costing much more than a window air conditioner would now. Super high quality american engineering & manufacturing at its best. Heavy cast american made steel was the primary material used along with some brass, bronze, etc. & you can definitely tell when you feel the heft of this fan (i think it weighs one metric ton). I have restored MANY fans & this is one of the best built ever made, hands down. Talk about overbuilt, this fan was built to last 3 lifetimes. I recently watched MUCH less a fan than this a 9 single speed g. This fan has been completely disassembled. The bottom cover plate, blade guard, stand, front motor & bearing cover, oscillating ring, struts, & blades have all been blasted & POWDER COATED (a process baked on at 500 degrees that is 10 times harder & more durable than paint) in gloss black. The motor was disassembled, cleaned, & polished. Every effort has been made to bring this fan to current UL standards. The switch & speed coil assembly were painstakingly disassembled, cleaned, & contacts polished, then reassembled with new thermo insulated lead wires & connectors. For safest everyday use, the original two strand lamp style cord was replaced with a new one gauge heavier thermo insulated round UL listed cord fitted with a new “retro” style UL listed plug. All electrical components were tested with an ohms meter & inspected to assure safety & proper operation. The orginal cloth wrapped two strand head wires were replaced with new ones with thermo insulation UNDER the cloth. The oscillating gear box was removed, opened, thoroughly cleaned of old grease & gunk, then the gears were inspected for any sign of wear & packed in new, fresh, high performance grease for another 85 plus years of use. The oil cartridges were removed, polished inside & out, then the wool oil wicks were replaced with new ones, the spring tension was adjusted, they were refilled with sewing machine oil & re-attached. All rubber grommets were replaced & heavy duty rubber pads were added to the bottom. The emblem was hand restored & double clear coated for preservation. All remaining components were thoroughly cleaned, polished, & clear coated as necessary (every single original screw, set screw, trundle screw, washer & nut gets polished & the threads cleaned). The fan was then reassembled, properly lubricated & test run & oscillated on different speeds for a minimum of two hours to check for perfect operation.
